Church Shootings: Protecting Your Congregation
With the rise of shooting incidents occurring in public spaces, it is more important than ever for Americans to stay alert and mindful of their surroundings. Unfortunately, deadly violence has been entering the church as well. Between 1999 and 2014 there were 792 reported incidents of violence involving firearms in churches, claiming the lives of 479 churchgoers. Below are four steps to help protect your congregation.
Step 1: Security Team
Assemble or hire a dedicated security team. Choose people with law enforcement or military experience. Members should have effective communication skills, be able to verbalize concerns about the security process, and — depending on state laws — be licensed and trained in the use of firearms. Visible security paraphernalia (earpieces, weapons, radios) acts as a strong deterrent.
Step 2: Security Risks During Service
Be aware of risks like doors with no greeter, unlocked doors at night, people coming and going at abnormal times, individuals wearing trench coats in warm weather, and people wandering the parking lot.
Step 3: Dealing with a Shooter
If an attack happens, the security team and police must be alerted immediately. Evacuate the congregation orderly and quickly, lock doors in areas that can be secured, and if possible have security personnel incapacitate the shooter. Inform the congregation of the security plan in advance and instruct them on the steps to protect themselves and one another.
While no one should live in constant fear in their place of worship, vigilance from every member helps ensure churches remain a safe place for everyone.
